Charles Heidsieck is the smallest of the Maisons de Reims. It was founded by Charles Camille, grandson of Florens-Louis, son of Charles and Amélie Henriot, back in 1851, when he bought as many as 47 crayères in which to vinify grapes grown by his cousin Ernest Henriot. Today, Maison Heidsieck is the benchmark among wineries of small size but great value and quality. The Maison's special feature are the large underground chalk quarries that stretch over 8 kilometers of tunnels, recognizing itself as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Millions of bottles are brought back inside, with maturation on the lees for up to forty years. The style of Heidsieck Champagne is recognizable and synonymous with harmony and generosity from the aromatic profile. Vinification only in steel as malolactic fermentation completes, long maturation on the lees and high sugar dosages. This awareness lends longevity and elegance to the Maison's Champagnes.
