Founded by royal decree on September 10, 1756, Real Companhia Velha is Portugal's oldest and most emblematic winery with its 260-year history serving the Douro. Quinta das Carvalhas, which belongs to the Companhia, is the most spectacular property in the Douro Valley enjoying a magnificent prominent position on the left bank of the river, in Pinhao. Its oldest vineyards, nearly 100 years old, are an incredible treasure representing some of the oldest native grape varieties found in the Douro Valley.
The year 2004 was dry and hot, with low and irregular levels of rainfall. Production levels were above average for the region, but lower than the previous year. The vegetative state of the plants was very good. Rainfall in August combined with dry weather in September outlined the conditions for significant changes in sugar levels.
